Why control grapevine pests and pathogens?

Insects, mites, fungi, and bacteria can negatively affect vines, triggering stress and damaging clusters and berries. These attacks can lead to significant losses, representing 20% to 40% of total profits for farmers worldwide.

What is biocontrol?
Biocontrol (alternative methods for controlling field pests and diseases) involves the strategic use of microbial pheromones (from bacteria, yeasts, fungi, and viruses) and other microbial metabolites to regulate and control pest and pathogen populations in agriculture. These tactics not only mitigate the negative effects of harmful agents in vineyards, but also help avoid the environmental impact associated with chemical use.

These microorganisms—mostly soil-derived—play a crucial role in nutrient bioavailability for crops, increasing the volume explored by roots and improving access to water.
